Mayawati lifts ban on student
After a hate-hate relationship with the student community since she came into power, Mayawati has finally decided to go easy on them.
 INDIA , 6-March-2008  4:31:25 AM
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has decided to lift the ban on student union elections, which was imposed last year.

After a hate-hate relationship with the student community since she came into power, Mayawati has finally decided to go easy on them.

''Because of our decision to ban these unions, there has been commendable improvement in the educational environment and the academic session has progressed in a normal manner,'' said Mayawati.

But now with the decision, there are some riders as well. The students contesting elections cannot be more than 25, they will need 75 per cent attendance in a proper college and they cannot spend more than Rs 5000 on the election campaign.

Some student leaders feel these conditions are too strict.

''I think these restrictions related to age should be relaxed to a certain extent, because they are against the principles of democracy,'' said Ranvijay Singh, student, Mass Communication, Department of Journalism, Lucknow University.

Some others even believe that Mayawati is not serious about lifting the ban.

''Student union elections are at least four to five months away, and it is quite possible that she might go back to her previous stand that all people associated with student politics are goons,'' said Sunil Singh Yadav, state president, Samajwadi Party Students' Union.

However, it cannot be denied that in Mayawati's new mantra of inclusive politics, student leaders may have a key role.
