Indefinite strike to hit 127 airpor
The government has banned airport employees from going on strike and imposed ESMA (Essential Services Maintenance Act) at Delhi airport
 INDIA , 11-March-2008  10:53:17 AM
The government has banned airport employees from going on strike and imposed ESMA (Essential Services Maintenance Act) at Delhi airport.

Around 500 Air Force personnel have been deployed at 21 civilian airports around the country in the wake of the strike to help ensure safety.

Around 20,000 airport employees will go on an indefinite strike across 127 airports from midnight to protest against the closing down of government-run Hyderabad and Bangalore airports.

Two new airports managed by the private sector are set to open soon in the two cities, but the Airport Authority Employees' Union wants the older airports to continue operations as well, a demand rejected by the Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla late on Monday.

The strike could delay flight movements at all 127 airports managed by the Airports Authority of India. Immediate impact will be on the international flights that generally take off in the early hours.

The strike means there will be no x-ray machine operators

No baggage handlers or cleaning staff

No housekeeping staff

No one to man the aerobridges

In effect, expect near-complete paralysis of the ground staff at airports.

Delhi and Mumbai airports may also be hit by the strike but only because other airports and flights will be affected.

Under the contract with the builders of the new airports in the two cities, the existing airports have to be closed once the new airports become operational.

Contractual obligations

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said as of now, under the contractual obligations with the builders of the new airports in the two cities, the existing facilities have to be closed.

Several rounds of meetings have already taken place to resolve matters, including those relating to the employees at Delhi and Mumbai airports, ''arbitrary'' decision to close existing airports in Hyderabad and Bangalore and not holding of tripartite committee meeting with regard to modernization plans.
