Allocity Inc., Director of Engineering – Bellevue, Washington
Hired to establish a development and test team to work closely with Microsoft on iSCSI storage management software targeted at Exchange e-mail requirements. I successfully hired a small development and test team. My team worked in cooperation with the companies Boulder engineering team to get the first release of the product developed, tested/certified and made generally available.
NuView Inc., VP of Business Development -Redmond, Washington.
Hired to determine if there was the possibility of a close working relationship between Microsoft and NuView and identify opportunities for growing NuView's customer base. NuView developed a GUI toolset to manage the distributed file system in Windows. I set up many meetings and discussions with Microsoft at the executive level. The net result was Microsoft was not interested in a relationship.
RLX Technologies, Director of Systems Engineering -Redmond, Washington.
Hired to establish marketing, development and business development relationships with corresponding Microsoft teams on emerging server blade technology. I placed RLX systems in key product areas where new Microsoft software was being developed to exploit server blade technology. We reviewed the technology roadmaps of both companies to ensure we were in sync. We also established co-marketing plans.
1967 to 2001: IBM Corporation
Director, IBM Center for Microsoft Technologies– Kirkland, Washington 1991 -2001
Moved to Redmond, Washington to establish and manage a programming development center in conjunction with Microsoft. The organization grew, under my leadership, from five to over 190 people. The mission was the development, porting and optimization of Microsoft’s Windows operating system to IBM hardware. The organization also included pre-sales marketing, an IT group and a service support team. The marketing efforts positively influenced $2B/year of revenue opportunity for IBM and allowed me to personally remain close to customer’s problems and requirements. The budget varied from $15M - $30M per year.
Manager of OS Development, IBM Corporation– Boca Raton, Florida 1988 - 1991
Led the planning, design and development of the 32-bit version of OS/2 in conjunction with Microsoft. Successfully shipped the first version of this as the OS/2 2.0 Software Developers Kit (SDK) in December 1989. During this period, also led the organization that developed and shipped OS/2 1.2 and 1.3. The organization was approximately 300 people and included product planning, design, development and component test.
Corporate Programming Staff, IBM Corporation– Purchase, New York 1986 - 1987
Responsible for defining the relationship of the AIX operating system family products across IBM’s hardware platforms and Systems Application Architecture.
Advanced Engineering Systems, IBM Corporation– Austin, Texas 1980 - 1986
Held various management positions in the AIX software development organization and Office Systems Architecture group. Managed AIX kernel development and the national language design of AIX, both resulting in major contributions to IBM’s revenue.
